Walking Portland: Hosford-Abernethy, Ladd’s Addition & SE Clinton Street

This five-mile Walking Portland loop features one of Portland’s oldest and increasingly trendiest neighborhoods–Hosford-Abernethy, which includes blast-from-the-past Ladd’s Addition and newly fashionable Clinton Street–with top-notch restaurants and one of the best ice cream shops in the city.

Directions

Main Route

1. Start at corner of SE Hawthorne Blvd. and SE 12^th
2. Head south on SE 12^th and proceed to SE Harrison St.
3. At SE Harrison St. turn west/right.
4. Proceed 1 block on SE Harrison St. and turn south/left onto SE 11^th
5. Head south on SE 11^th Ave to SE Division St.
6. At SE Division St. and turn east/left.
7. Proceed east on SE Division St. to SE 24^th and turn north/left.
8. Proceed north on SE 24^th to SE Hawthorne Blvd. and turn west/left.
9. Proceed west on SE Hawthorne Blvd. to start point at corner of SE Hawthorne Blvd. and SE 12^th

Clinton Extended Route

1. At Step 7 above, proceed to SE 18^th and turn south/right.
2. Proceed south on SE 18^th and turn east/left on SE Clinton St.
3. Proceed on SE Clinton St. to SE 26^th and turn north/left.
4. Proceed on SE 26^th to SE Harrison St. and turn west/left.
5. Proceed 1 block on SE Harrison St. and turn north/right on SE 24^th
6. Proceed north on SE 24^th to SE Hawthorne Blvd. and turn west/left.
7. Proceed west on SE Hawthorne Blvd. to the starting point at corner of SE Hawthorne Blvd. and SE 12^th

Ladd’s Addition Circle Extended Route

1. At corner of SE Hawthorne Blvd. and SE 12^th connect with SE Ladd Ave. and head southeast diagonally across Ladd’s Addition.
2. At Ladd Circle Park in the center of the neighborhood, maneuver around the garden and continue on SE Ladd Ave.
3. At SE Division St. turn west/right and proceed to the corner of SE 12^th and SE Elliott Ave.
4. At the corner of SE 12^th and SE Elliott Ave. head northeast diagonally across Ladd’s Addition.
5. At Ladd Circle Park in the center of the neighborhood, maneuver around the garden and continue on SE Elliott Ave. to SE Hawthorn Blvd.
6. At SE Hawthorn Blvd. turn west/left and continue to start point at SE Hawthorne Blvd. and SE 12^th

Distance

The Main Route is 2.5 miles–with options to extend the walk into the Clinton mini-hood (blue; .75 mile), criss-cross Ladd’s Addition (yellow; 2 miles), and circle Ladd’s Park (green; 1 mile). So an easy city walk, from 2.5 to 6.25 miles.

Time

At a pace of 20 minutes per mile, plus a little time for gawking, allow 1 hour for the main route. 30 minutes for the Clinton route, 45 minutes for Ladd’s Addition criss-cross, and 30 minutes for Ladd’s Addition circle. So about 3 hours in total. Plus time for coffee. 🙂

Terrain

Mostly flat, Portland-style sidewalks (often uneven and in need of repair).

Difficulty

Easy.

Good options for coffee and pastries along this route include Upper Left Roasters, Cellar Door Coffee Roasters, Farina Bakery, Grand Central Bakery, K & F Clinton Street Coffeehouse, Little T American Baker, Oui Presse, and Palio Dessert & Coffeehouse.
